Developments over the last decade in next-generation sequencing (NGS) have made bacterial whole-genome sequencing (WGS) practical for routine use in public health settings. The technology is already being applied in such areas as foodborne disease, tuberculosis and hospital-acquired infections. But applications for bacterial WGS go well beyond these areas. In the next AMD Webinar, CDC laboratory scientists will present the application of WGS to meningitis pathogens (meningococci and H. influenzae), streptococci (three major pathogens) and Legionella. The webinar will cover public health applications (e.g., subtyping and phenotypic inference) as well as an overview of the practical aspects of implementing WGS for these pathogens.

At the conclusion of this program, the participant will be able to:

  • Describe how WGS of three groups of pathogens can support public health efforts
  • Evaluate the potential benefits of implementing WGS for the three groups of pathogens in their laboratory
  • Determine what resources would be needed to begin applying WGS to these pathogens in his or her laboratory
