Although per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs; sometimes known as perfluorinated chemicals) have been used since the 1950s, they are being detected more and more frequently in water supplies throughout the country. Public health/environmental agencies and laboratories have been called upon to assess public health risk, but laboratory capability and capacity is currently somewhat limited.
