Clinical microbiology laboratories often have a difficult time identifying Gram Positive Rods (GPRs). In this presentation, focus will be on clinical relevancy and the microbiology of a wide variety of GPRs which are the subject of a recent mini-review on this subject (October 2012 issue of J. Clinical Microbiology). Strengths and weaknesses of a variety of identification methods, from rapid ID panels to MALDI, as well as antimicrobial susceptibility testing methods and general multidrug resistance trends, will also be addressed.
At the conclusion of this program, the participants will be able to:
- Define situations when it would be medically relevant to attempt identification of these GPRs to genus and species (and when not to bother).
- Discuss the usefulness and limitations associated with various identification methods commonly used to identify these types of GPRs.
- Identify which species are often multidrug resistant, to assist with better predictions for successful patient treatment.
