This intermediate-level, interactive course module is designed to update participants on the laboratory and clinical detection and identification of Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC). The course module uses a case study and scenario approach to inform laboratory scientists about the current recommendations regarding testing for STEC and encourages compliance with the recommendations. Images of the scenario characters and transcripts of their conversations add interest and appeal. Extensive interactivity is incorporated via links to additional materials and knowledge check points.
After completion of this program, the participant will be able to:
· Describe the clinical and epidemiological aspects of enteric disease caused by Shiga toxin-producing E. coli (STEC).
· Discuss the significance of STEC other than E. coli O157:H7.
· Describe recommended laboratory methods for identification and reporting of STEC.
· Implement the recommended laboratory methods for identification and reporting of STEC.
Who Should Attend:
Persons interested in the surveillance, diagnosis and treatment of enteric disease will find this course module of interest.
