One global public health challenge is detecting pathogens in water. Advances in laboratory procedures are allowing for better detection of pathogens. Like Cryptosporidium—which can cause gastrointestinal illness. The illness may be severe and sometimes fatal for people with weakened immune systems. This program will discuss how environmental laboratories can improve detection of waterborne pathogens in order to maintain the health and well-being of people, especially those with compromised immune systems. It will also cover how laboratories using the newer procedures (with dispersant addition) should have better Cryptosporidium detection, especially for difficult matrices, and achieve better quality control results than those using previous procedures.
